Employment

This section of our website is mainly directed to care leavers and organisations or companies in search of potential employees. The 'Upload CV page' will allow care leavers to display their work experience, education and skills to potential employers visiting the page. Alongside the CV's displayed, information on how to access employment and properly construct your CV is also available on our resources page and general tips and information on what to look out for when looking for a job once out of care.

How Care Leavers are Affected

Picture

Care leavers statistically have increased rates of mental health struggles which may affect their academic exams, struggle receiving appropriate housing as well as acquiring employment. Due to these factors this results in the need to work more hours than non-care experienced peers, just so they can afford to pay rent as many cannot live with family.

Care leavers do not receive as much support to access to further education such as university. Although there are now some bursaries but often these do not help bridge that barrier to allow them to go. Often finance isn't the only barrier but also support - care leavers can not go home over the summer and are often isolated during this time and during holidays such as Christmas.

Below are a few of the challenges a care leaver may face:

  • Working extra hours just to meet everyday requirements
  • Difficult to acquire employment due to lack of experience
  • No  / little support once out of care
  • Lack of employment opportunities

Wellbeing Wall

In our offices we have encouraged the young people to assist putting up a wellbeing wall, with information on what it means to have a strong state of mind.

Some of the topics displayed on the wall include tips of wellbeing and mindfulness.

We work in partnership with the Lowdown and Service Six to support our young people with their wellbeing for both short term and long term solutions.

The wall explains factors that could impact their wellbeing and steps they could take when going through such events.
