Andy Smith From Smash Life UK opens up about his experience as a care leaver

3/12/2020

Growing up in the UK Care System, Andy Smith opens up about some of the comments, barriers and difficulties he faced as a care leavers. From that, him and his brother launched Smash Life UK (link below) which is all about supporting and empowering others who may be in similar circumstances. Last week Andy shared an experience he had which reflects some of the stigma attached to care leavers.

“You grew up in care? You look to smart to have grown up in care you have a suit”

TRUE STORY. A leaving care team manager I just met said this to me at an awards evening last year. And trust me comments like these knock you for 6 and take you right back to being that child no one wanted to connect to but labelled.

I am not sharing to shame I am sharing to change PERCEPTIONS and help people understand this is still happening to children every day and being completely honest my reply and mindset following this when I was younger still caught up in my trauma and abuse would have been a lot different.

If only that team manager new my journey and my passion as a result of my journey in care.

NOW....it’s just fuel to my fire to change mindsets and perceptions through educating, engaging and inspiring.

Children FEEL every word...they are particularly sensitive due to the worlds they have lived...choose your language wisely and kindly.

Advocate promoting the work that we do

7/9/2020

We are so excited to have been able to be part of MoMa's Advocacy Programme where we had a young person called Nayfin Abdull promote our work for two weeks in September of this year. As well as advocating for our work, Nayfin was also fundraising for us (Selling MoMa's Cookies boxes, percentage was donated to Right Resolution CIC). It was great to see that these efforts were also recognised by Northampton Chron and Echo as we were mention in their article abour the Advocacy Programme.

Nayfin also wrote a blog about why the work that we do is important and why she decided to promote our work. Find more more here
Nayfin says "A small CIC like this needs the recognition because they are committed to guiding, helping and developing young people leaving care. "

2016:
This year to celebrate the achievements of young people on the project a group of 8 visited Frankie and Bennies for an afternoon of fun and food!

On Wednesday 23rd November the young people visited the restaurant and took part in activities such as bread stick and pizza making. Young people gained valuable insight to how pizza and breadsticks are made. It also provided the opportunity for young people to enjoy a meal together. Young people were also divided into teams and participated in a general knowledge and famous faces quiz. To finish off the afternoon young people all had ice-creams!

Overall the afternoon was a fantastic success full of fun and laughter and was a brilliant way to celebrate the achievements of young people.

step up - northamptonshire

31/12/2017

Project funded by Northamptonshire Community Foundation
2017 was a very busy year! Baking, car boots, bowling, ice skating, stalls and much much more!
In April 2017 Right Resolution was awarded funding from the Northamptonshire Community Foundation through the Queens Institute.

The funding was to run a project for one year which encouraged young people creating, organising and implementing initiatives and events to help raise funds. The funds were then spent on social activities for the young people.

Young people also had the opportunity to gain a Level 1 award called the Volunteer Passport. This covers areas such as health and safety, equality and diversity, first aid and working with people.

Over the year approximately £500 was raised which meant lots of exciting opportunities for social activities!

Christmas is a busy time of year for everyone and it has been especially busy at Right Resolution. Our Christmas Food and Toilteries Appeal has been a huge success once again.
Donations for food and toiletries came in vast quantities from a number of different sources across Northamptonshire.
This year another young person on the project designed the Right Resolution Christmas Card. A huge thank you to Louise for her fantastic artistic skills. We also attended a local fete selling cakes, crafts and quizzes which was very enjoyable.
A grand total of £992 was raised. Huge thank you to everyone's very generous donations!
